when the football season
meets the Sunday morning summer.
A lone cow descants to raucous shouts,
the herd loll in a dappled circle.
Halftime.
You perch upon the hawthorn hedge,
head bouncing sunshine.
A little bit of bread and no cheese.
You deserve more—
bring out the Stilton,
ruffle your feathers in a hoppy ale.

            [content] => Derek Hughes is a retired GP, living in semi-rural Leicestershire to which he moved to be involved in his two granddaughter’s upbringing. He has written all his life and is a member of The Poetry Society's South Leicestershire Stanza. He's been placed several times in competitions and was delighted to win First Prize in the Magma short poetry competition in 2019. A lot of his writing is quirky and/or ‘Nature’ based. He enjoys many recent poets and of the earlier ones John Clare has been a particular friend. He is always delighted to see and hear yellowhammers.
