  1. Hi,

When does this re-open please and what are the age ranges? My daughter is 7 and it’s hard to find competitions for younger ages.

    1. Hello,

Thanks for your message! The Eric Gregory Awards are for collections of poetry and wouldn’t be suitable for a 7 year old. However, all the challenges on Young Poets Network are totally free and open to all poets of all ages up to 25. We do receive and publish entries by poets of your daughter’s age, so I would encourage her to enter. Even closed challenges can act as inspiration for her writing.

      Currently, we have open:

Thinking Outside the Penalty Box asks for poems inspired by extraordinary African lives, and offers the chance of print publication and up to £100 in book vouchers (we can convert this into your currency, don’t worry!): ypn.poetrysociety.org.uk/workshop/thinking-outside-the-penalty-box-poetry-challenge/ (closes 28 February – so get your skates on!)

Nearlyology is a challenge asking you to explore what has nearly happened to you, and how it’s changed your life. Enter by 11 March for the chance of publication on YPN and an exclusive notebook as well as other poetry goodies! ypn.poetrysociety.org.uk/workshop/nearlyology-a-new-poetry-challenge/

I hope this is helpful; do get in touch if you have any questions.

      Best of luck!

      Helen at Young Poets Network

  2. What are the age ranges? i am 16 (pushing 17) and i do not know if i am eligible to enter.

    Many thanks

    1. Hi Kakrah,

Thanks for your comment. The Eric Gregory Awards aren’t run by YPN and more information can be found on their website. The competition is currently closed for 2018 so I think the best thing to do is to wait until next year when it re-opens to read the instructions, or get in touch with the organisers. http://www.societyofauthors.org/Prizes/Poetry/Eric-Gregory

      Best of luck!

  3. Hi,
I’m a thirteen year old young writer who has written a collection of different short stories and poems, please can you tell me about any upcoming poetry competitions.

    1. Hi Gabriel,

If you are aged 11-17, you are eligible for the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, with life-changing prizes such as mentoring, poetry books and more: foyleyoungpoets.org It’s one of the biggest competitions for young poets in the world!

We would also love to receive poetry by you in our free Young Poets Network challenges. You might be interested in the challenge we currently have open, inspired by the enigmatic and inviting work of poet W.S. Graham. Enter a Cloud, Imagine a Forest now: bit.ly/wsgchallenge

And another asks for responses to Freud’s Civilisation and Its Discontents – learn more on the challenge page and enter by 15 July: bit.ly/freudchallenge

You can also get inspired by the Timothy Corsellis Prize, responding to poets of the Second World War: bit.ly/corsellis18

To keep up to date on all we offer young poets, you can also join our free mailing list: ypn.poetrysociety.org.uk/sign-up-to-young-poets-network/

I hope this is helpful, and best of luck with your writing!

      Best wishes,

      Helen at Young Poets Network
