Fowey Festival Competition for Young Writers and Artists

Closed for 2020. Calling all budding children writers and artists! Create and submit your own story, poem or picture and enter our competition to become Fowey Festival Young Writer or Young Artist of the Year 2020.  Entries from both individual children and schools are welcome.

This competition is open to all children living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly aged 4-16 years on the final entry date of 6th March 2020.  You can do this as an individual, or through your school. Thanks to generous sponsorship, entry is free!

In Vanishing Cornwall, Daphne Du Maurier wrote that ‘the beauty and mystery still beckon’, ending with the words, ‘the challenge is still to the young.’ Our challenge to you for 2020 is to send us a short story, poem or picture that captures the spirit of Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly. Whether it’s enchanted Cornwall, the beauty of wild Cornwall, Cornwall responding to worldwide change or the mysteries of the Isles of Scilly. Whatever you would like to focus on, we would love to hear from you! Remember all work submitted must be an original and by the child entering the competition.

If you are reading this as a teacher, we do hope that your school will get involved, either for the first time or as a returning school. You are welcome to use this competition in any way you wish – in whole class work, as an enrichment activity for the more able and/or disadvantaged children, or as an individual activity at home.

    1. Hi Bijit,

Thanks for your message. We don’t run this competition but it is open again now, closing 16 March 2018, on the theme of birds. Best of luck!

    1. Hi Owoh,

Thanks for your comment. This competition isn’t run by Young Poets Network but looking at the website I have found the following:

“Young Artist of the Year Awards and Young Writer of the Year Awards will be presented together with prizes totalling £500 on 19th May, the final day of the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature.
First and Second prizes for works of art, poems and stories will be awarded in each of 3 groups: Infant, Junior and Secondary.” (

If you are interested in more free writing opportunities, Young Poets Network has two challenges open currently: find out more here and sign up to our free mailing list to see all that we offer young people here:

      Best of luck!
