A huge thank you to everyone who entered SLAMbassadors this year! The judges, poet, playwright and editor Sabrina Mahfouz; SLAMbassadors Artistic Director Joelle Taylor; and The Poetry Society’s Education Manager Nazmia Jamal were impressed by the number of entries from across the country and had a difficult job selecting winners as the quality of this year’s submissions was so high.
We are delighted to announce our winners for 2017 and can’t wait to work with these exciting young artists.
Our six SLAMbassadors national champions for 2017 are:
Arinola Adegbite, 16, who has already won awards for her writing and produced a first collection of poems.
Emmeline Armitage, 17, a recent recruit to the writing collective Young Identity and a member of the National Youth Theatre.
Mukahang Limbu, 16, a commended Foyle Young Poet of the Year for 2016 and 2017 who recently won the Forward/emagazine Student Critics competition.
Eben Roddis, 15, a spoken word artist who is interested in rap and music production.
Charlotte Sonnex, 14, who participated in a SLAMbassadors workshop at her school and is eager to keep writing!
Chelsea Stockham, 16, a keen writer of all mediums who has been writing poetry for about a year.
The Cold Fire Award for 2017 goes to:
Honey Birch, 17, an indie musician and writer who tends to write songs rather than poems – she’ll be bringing her guitar to the showcase!
The Cold Fire Award was set up last year in memory of Thomas Crosbie (also known as PACE or Cold Fire) who was a SLAMbassadors winner in 2003.
We would also like to congratulate our commended winners:
Massive congratulations to all this year’s champions! Arinola, Emmeline, Mukahang, Eben, Charlotte, Chelsea and Honey will be joining Joelle Taylor for a masterclass weekend on 18 and 19 November which will culminate in a public performance on Sunday 19 November at legendary London venue Cargo. They will perform their winning pieces and new work alongside a headline set from the incredible Sabrina Mahfouz and host Joelle Taylor will share some of her spectacular work with the audience too.
