  1. Is this competition still open. I teach at risk youth (self harm, depression, anxiety) and would like them to have the opportunity of entering their work.

    1. Hi Martine,

We don’t run this competition but from a quick search on the internet it looks like it is closed for good – or at least for 2017 and 18.

You may find it helpful to look at our online platform and resource for young writers, Young Poets Network (www.youngpoetsnetwork.org.uk). YPN hosts regular competitions, challenges and feature to appeal to and inspire young writers, and which also lists lots of different poetry opportunities, some of which your daughter may be eligible for, the winners of which are published on our website. Many of our challenges, for example, are open to entrants from all over the world and offer publication on our website as a prize. Even challenges that have closed may still act as a prompt for your students’ own writing.

Our Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is currently closed but will re-open next Spring. This is the biggest poetry competition for young writers aged 11-17 anywhere in the world and is free to enter. The top 100 chosen poets (15 winners and 85 commended) receive a range of fantastic prizes, from mentoring to a life-changing residential writing course, from Poetry Society membership to a stack of poetry goodies. For more information please visit foyleyoungpoets.org

I can also add you or your students to our Young Poets Network mailing list, which will keep you up-to-date with all the latest poetry news and opportunities from us – just let me know.

I hope those sound like things that might be of interest – please do let me know if you have any further queries.

      All best wishes,
