  1. My daughter is almost 12 years old but she has a writing age beyond her years. She won a national poetry competition this year and has just had a poem published in an anthology with notable poets such as Michael Horowitz and Robert Montgomery. She would like to enter the competition for young writers even thou she is not yet 16. Would she be able to do so? If it would assist, I am happy to send you one of her poems so you have an idea of her poetry.

    Kind regards,
    Susan Fong

    1. Dear Susan,

Thanks for your comment – it’s great to hear that your daughter is such a keen writer! This competition is not run by Young Poets Network, but as it is an essay competition I wonder if it’s the kind of thing you’re looking for in any case? They would not accept an entry from someone younger than 16.

However, Young Poets Network has no lower age limit, and we host many free poetry challenges that offer prizes and publication. We currently have two open:

Our Wish List Challenge asks young writers to look again at the idea of wish lists and wanting (or not). We look at different poems by writers like Roger McGough, Chen Chen, Sharon Olds and Frank O’Hara to get poets inspired. Enter for free by 1 January. bit.ly/wishlistchallenge

We also have a challenge themed around Charles Causley’s ‘Timothy Winters’ poem. UK based winners will be invited to perform at The Poetry Café at a Charles Causley centenary event in January! bit.ly/causleychallenge

I would also highly highly recommend entering our Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, the biggest international youth poetry competition in the world. It’s a truly life changing prize for poets aged 11-17 – perfect for your daughter! It’s not yet open for 2018 but will re-open in the spring. poetrysociety.org.uk/competitions/foyle-young-poets-of-the-year-award

I can also add you or your daughter to the Young Poets Network mailing list if you like. Email me at educationadmin@poetrysociety.org.uk with her or your email and I can do that straight away, and answer any further questions.

      Best wishes,

      Helen at Young Poets Network
